End Times Round Up 1.15.11

It has been awhile since the last roundup. Here is the best of End Times thoughts from around the internet.

1. Wednesdays with Wright: Monotheism, Election and Eschatology.
A good summary of N.T. Wright's thoughts in Jesus and the Victory of God. Wright is a leader in current progressive eschatological thoughts and integrates it well into the rest of theology.  Brian does a great job of quickly summarizing a few key points.

 2. Glenn Beck and Mormon Eschatology.
More and more I think Beck is a fascinating character when it comes to American eschatology. I will wait till later to flesh that out, but this article is an interesting piece looking at his political bent and religion. Beck also factors in by urging people to horde food, another factor in Mormon eschatology. The LDS "theological" reasoning for food storage is here.

 

End Times Roundup 11.2.10

1. Gospel Urgency or Eschatological Fad?
John Yeats writes an interesting post with the Southern Baptist Conventions fascination between missiology and Matthew 24:14.  How does our mission outreach as Christians prime Heaven for the Eschaton?  This is a good look at conservative eschatology. Spend 5 minutes and read about what we weren't taught.

3. Eschatology
Mike Kimel writes a very interesting treatment of a secular political eschatology and predictions.  I like to this because I think it is important to see how the religious pattern of predictions and even the idea of "the end" being a cataclysmic event has seeped into society as a whole.

4. Evangelical Anxieites #5- The End of the World.
The late and great Michael Spencer wrote this a few years ago, and the folks that run internetmonk.com have reposted it.  This is one of the better conservative evangelical approaches to the reasoning behind having good Eschatology. I cannot think of the limitations of this post.

1. Reasons to teach Eschatology-by Daniel Blanche
One of the questions I have to field many times is why folks even need to think about Eschatology. Daniel does a great job quickly relating it in this post.

2. Predestination and Eschatology-John Roop
Roop offers a view of how Predestination and Eschatology interact with each other in the classic sense as well as from the Great Tradition, that mercy and grace were determined from the beginning.

3. Surviving the Apocalypse Hollywood Style-Wired Magazine
Wired did a section on the Apocalypse in a recent issue.  This is a great survival guide according to Hollywood. Check out the rest of the articles...they are great fun.

4. Eschatology is the cause of our modern malady-Dylan Nickelson
A good post outlining a form of secular eschatology oriented around John Gray’s  Black Mass: Apocalyptic Religion and the Death of Utopia.  A good read for anyone enjoying philospohy and social critique.

End Times Roundup 10.4.10

While it took a couple of weeks to get information last time, this week was QUICK.  These offering are varied...but all are great for anyone interested in eschatology.

1. Eschatological Minimalism:
I often struggle to find the right way to begin a discussion on The End. It is long, but worth the read for anyone who teaches any sort of Bible study or theology in the local church.

3. Eschatology: Premillenialism and Amillenialism
Elise does a great job here, wonderful notes on the differences between the two subjects.

4. $800 for a years supply of food-survival kit style.
BoingBoing.net highlights this interesting survival kit from Costco.  The discussion in the comments is particularly interesting.

End Times Roundup 10.1.10

The web has been quiet these last few weeks, so our offerings have been slim.  Here are a few that I have found to be interesting and way from the usual conversations.

1. Wesleyan Eschatology and a Personal Perspective
From Laura over at Arulba.com.  This post really jumped out at me because I am a Wesleyan and I understand how frustrating it is the study eschatology from this perspective since John Wesley didn't seem to be concerned with it.

2. John Piper's "An Evening of Eschatology"
Continually in my twitter search on #eschatology this video keeps popping up.  I am planning on watching it this weekend to finally get familiar with it.  I want to link to it because it is becoming a pretty serious work that many are citing and using to form their views on The End.

3. 2013: Or, what to do when the Apocalypse doesn't arrive:
A great article from a secular perspective about the fervor of 2012 and the development of Apocalyptic thought in modern culture.

4. Rapture Snacks
Matt Stout is a friend here at Asbury Seminary who draws several comics.  One of them is Community Life and can be found on our seminary blog.  He just published his first book of strips from this series and I found a great one that snuck by on me.  I figured I would share it here with you.

End Times Round Up-8.30.10

Sorry it has been so long since our last round up.  The summer got a little busier than the summer should be.  Here are some interesting pieces surrounding the idea of apocalypse/eschatology over the last few weeks.

1.  Wake Up and Smell the Apocalypse-by Slavoj Zizek
One of the more interesting topics that has entered the broader subject of eschatology is environmental apocalypse, especially at the hands of humans.  Zizek is a Marxist (something I don't stand behind), but he provides a very interesting secular critique.  Read this from the sense of secular apocalypse.

2. Overcoming the Sting of Death-Blake Huggins
I will just give you a quote from Catherine Keller-read the rest of the article.

"Might a counter-apocalyptic Christian eschatology suggest an alternative to [the] neo-apocalyptic sense of finality as well as to mere rejections of apocalypse in favor of banal, endless, linear time, what we might call a counter-apocalypse?"

3. Is the end of the world near?-Kevin Beck

A great treatment of the hysteria that some evangelicals fall into.  Beck gives a great treatment of Jesus and his words regarding "the end" from the gospels.

When I first decided to do this, I was curious as to how much information there was out there.  These last few weeks while I have been out of pocket I realized truly how many people on the internet are blogging about Eschatology.  Here is the End Times Roundup for the last few weeks.

The Christian Watershed engages McClaren's Huffington Post article a few weeks back with Is it time for a "New Kind of Eschatology?"

My friend Aaron Mansfield at Apostolic Obsession wrote Pastoral Theology for the coming Zombie Apocalypse. Great social engagement here.

Taking a lengthy, but good approach to a complex theological topic, Tim Etherington writes about Problems with Amillenialism.

David Fitch takes another approach against Brian McClaren in a posting series about called "The Emerging View of Salvation: The Dangers of De-eschatologizing the kingdom."
