I think the foundation of my fascination with the End started when I was a young boy. I remember vaguely hearing about 88 Reasons Why The Rapture Will Be in 1988 / On Borrowed Time. This latent fear of the End times was pretty formational-especially when people start predicting stuff.
That to say-I am always interested when I start seeing new dates pop up. The latest is May 21st 2011. Through twitter and a few other places I started to gather some basic information. The best place to begin to sort through the information is Rapture5212011.blogspot.com
It appears that the majority of the traction is coming from Harold Camping, a self-proclaimed evangelist with no real church connection (and a history of predictions). A search also brought up this site, against Camping's teachings. Trust me-you will be opening up a crackpot portal if you start link chasing this (but it certainly was fun).
I get frustrated with these events because the sense of escapism that Rapture theology provides. I haven't really written here about the Rapture that much, but I have a feeling I will be having to open that can of worms up soon.
Yes-in the End the promised restoration of humanity and all of creation will be fulfilled. Grace will be exercised in it's fullest measure for those who belong to God. Judgment will happen, because sin and evil must be dealt with. But ideas like Camping, among others, aren't part of church tradition and are a horrible exegesis and interpretation of Matthew 24. As Christians, we are in the world to be the body of Christ poured out for the world. Our sacramental identity is the same as Israel-to be pointing the nations towards the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. There is so much more that can be said-but that will have to be for later. What is important is that we recognize these false teachings as that...false teachings. As a Church we stand against those who have lost the Christian identity of love, hope, charity and most importantly mission.
As we live as sojourners, with full knowledge of the story of God, we should be offering that story up to those who have lost themselves.
Glory be to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit;
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be
