2 Topics for thought/discussion.
One of the things that I have been really focusing on over the past couple of months is getting in shape and really watching what I eat. Not just for health's sake, but just for an overall view of eating. Thats why I have a garden, and I am also trying to start eating vegetables that I wouldn't have in the past. I also have
an old bicycle that I have started to ride around. I call it the "murdercycle". Tonight, Justin and Charis came over and we start talking about my bike. They actually found it on the side of the road, but since both of them have road bikes they gave me the murdercycle. It is an old-style cruiser, with a rack on the back and everything. It doesn't like hills, and neither do I, so I have just about given up on riding it, since I live at the top of a pretty good sized hill. I decided to ride Charis's road bike to see if it would make a difference. Justin and I head out, with him on the murdercycle. About 100 yards from the house I attempt to change gears, and through some sort of happenstance that I don't understand, I end up sliding across the pavement with my glasses ten feet in front of my and me head bouncing on the concrete. Everything is fine, but I don't think I have been in a bicycle wreck in at least 15 years, so it was an odd experience.
Second topic.
Do all theologians have something external that drives theological thought? This last semester has been really dry in regard to personal, original thought. I was in the bookstore today and a friend ask me if I was still painting. With the exception of a few pieces that I made by request for the Asbury art show, I haven't really been actively involved in creation since I moved to Kentucky. It makes me think about why I enjoyed (and was better at) theology more when I was in Louisiana. I was (a). actively involved in a worshiping community that was constantly bouncing things off of each other and (b). personally involved in a creative act that was a deep, inner spiritual process.
It's not like I haven't noticed this before, but it really sunk in this evening (maybe because my head was spinning and all I could think about was Dairy Queen). I haven't done what actually drew me into the place where I am today in a long time. I still make things from time to time, usually for work, but I haven't really done anything major in two years.
I guess I have some new things to add to my summer "want to do" list.
chad-- always include photos in posts like these. ;-)
